Bill Aims To Allow Renters To Post Campaign Signs

Sen. Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego, introduced a bill today that would allow renters to post political campaign signs in the windows of their apartments or homes.

There is no protection under current law for renters if their landlord decides to ban displays of political signs, according to Kehoe's office.

"Every Californian's political views are a cornerstone of our democracy, and renters deserve the right to express their views just as much as homeowners," Kehoe said. "Whether it's posting a sign supporting a candidate or a neighborhood issue, there is no reason to continue this second-class status for the 40 percent of Californians who are renters."

Similar legislation carried by Kehoe in 2006 was vetoed by former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
