SAN DIEGO Starting Monday, September 26th, KPBS Evening Edition will deliver local news and analysis to the San Diego community - weeknights at 6:30 p.m. on KPBS-TV.
“We’ve spent a lot of time preparing and planning for this program,” said Tom Karlo, KPBS General Manager. “We saw a tremendous opportunity on television to provide our community with intelligent, objective, and accurate news on global and local issues. The news team is ready to deliver the same thoughtful, high quality news on TV that our audiences have come to expect on KPBS radio and at KPBS.org.”
KPBS Evening Edition
Each night KPBS Evening Edition will begin with brief local headlines before digging deeper into specific topics of importance. The program will feature thorough interviews with newsmakers as well as video packages from the field. KPBS Evening Edition will also regularly feature the expert KPBS reporters who specialize in certain beats. A different topic will be featured each day of the week:
Monday - Biz/Tech Desk
Tuesday - Healthy San Diego Desk
Wednesday - Fronteras Desk
Thursday - Community Desk
Friday - Culture Desk
The audience will have an opportunity to participate via e-mail, phone or social media and be featured in the daily Feedback/Follow-up segment at the end of the program.
From politics to policy, environment to education, KPBS Evening Edition will deliver the information needed to understand what’s happening in the diverse communities throughout San Diego County.
Investigative Newsource Partners with KPBS
In addition to the launch of KPBS Evening Edition, KPBS is happy to announce an enhanced partnership with Investigative Newsource (formally The Watchdog Institute). Investigative Newsource is an independent nonprofit and has been based at San Diego State University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies for two years. Starting October 1, Investigative Newsource reporting staff will share space in the new Joan and Irwin Jacobs KPBS News Center.
KPBS and Investigative Newsource both share similar journalistic goals and standards. Dedicated to satisfying a need for credible, in-depth, data-driven journalism, Investigative Newsource shines a light on government actions, accounts for public spending and prompts intelligent discussions that lead to informed decisions.
This isn’t the first time KPBS and Investigative Newsource have worked together. KPBS and Newsource (under the Watchdog Institute name) collaborated on a four-month investigation of the whooping cough epidemic, the mutating disease and the vaccines prescribed to protect the public. The report released in December 2010 prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to study a new strain of whooping cough after acknowledging the current vaccine may not be completely effective.
“Working with Investigative Newsource allows us to deepen our commitment to investigative journalism,” said Suzanne Marmion, Director of News and Editorial Strategy for KPBS. “As other media outlets cut back, this type of reporting that shines a light into the darkness is critical for our community."
KPBS TV Schedule Changes

Beginning at 2pm, KPBS will present three hours of educational programming for early school aged children: “Martha Speaks,” “Arthur,” “Wordgirl,” “Wild Kratts” (new), “Electric Company,” and “Fetch.”
Fans of Huell Howser can watch their favorite host weekdays at 5pm, with the “Nightly Business Report” following at 5:30pm. The “BBC World News” and the “PBS Newshour” will remain at their normal times, 6:00pm and 7:00pm respectively.
