Strict new gun control proposals are moving through the California legislature.

Among the eight bills are measures that would ban semi-automatic rifles that accept detachable magazines, ban large-capacity magazines and require permitting for ammunition purchases.

The bills sparked emotional testimony in a Senate committee. Cynthia Pillsbury with Moms Demand Action described her reaction to the shootings in Newtown, Connecticut.

“My thoughts went directly to the parents, the mothers whose hearts broke in a million pieces that day. I picked up my two older children at school with tears running down my face as did many mothers,” Pillsbury said.

Several law enforcement officials told lawmakers the bills are unenforceable and will only affect law-abiding citizens. Opponents say the legislation won’t decrease crime.

The bills are expected to pass their first committee votes Tuesday.
