Plane Skids Off Runway At New York's LaGuardia

A Delta passenger flight skidded off a snow-covered runway at New York's LaGuardia International Airport, slamming through a fence on the side of the tarmac. Passengers were being evacuated and their were no immediate reports of injuries.

The MD-80 was inbound from Atlanta. The incident, which occurred at about 11:10 a.m. ET, prompted the airport to be closed for the day, according to NPR's Hansi Lo Wang.

Video from local television stations showed passengers exiting over the wing and the aircraft's nose poked through a chain-linked fence. Numerous emergency vehicles were also on scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the incident. The Associated Press quotes Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman Joe Pentangelo as saying the plane was apparently leaking fuel.

The AP says it's not clear how many people were aboard the flight.
