  • Pacific Arts Movement is thrilled to unveil the dynamic and inspiring film lineup for the 13th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF) Spring Showcase. Taking place at Ultrastar Cinemas in Mission Valley, San Diego, from April 18 to 25, 2024, this year's showcase promises a diverse film line-up spanning over 8 days.Audiences will enjoy a curated selection of 15+ films hailing from China, Hong Kong, Iran, South Korea, and beyond. Among the highlights is a four-film retrospective, Through Tibetan Eyes: the Films of Pema Tseden, honoring the late Tibetan filmmaker Pema Tseden, offering viewers a poignant journey into the modern Tibetan identity through the lens of cinematic mastery.Kicking off the festival on April 18 is the dramedy "The Queen of My Dreams," a nostalgic exploration of familial relationships and personal discovery following the unexpected passing of a Pakistani Canadian woman's father. As she navigates the complexities of her grief, audiences are invited on a heartfelt journey replete with cultural nuances and universal themes.This year’s Sunday Spotlight, Through Tibetan Eyes: the Films of Pema Tseden, is a retrospective on the late Pema Tseden, whose pioneering work in Tibetan cinema continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. Through four of his seminal films, viewers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Tseden's visionary storytelling and profound exploration of Tibetan identity.In addition to the compelling film lineup, the festival will feature an Asian and Asian American Poetry Jam presented by San Diego Poetry Futures 2024 on April 20. This free event includes a live poetry reading and workshop in collaboration with San Diego Poet Laureate Jason Magabo Perez, providing attendees with an enriching cultural storytelling experience beyond the screen.Bringing the showcase to a close on April 25 is the awe-inspiring documentary "Ashima," which chronicles the extraordinary feats of Ashima Shiraishi, one of the world's youngest elite rock climbers.   • The California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF), a non-profit organization committed to promoting sport and physical fitness among fire responders, is thrilled to announce the 57th Annual US Police & Fire Championships taking place Saturday, June 8 to Saturday, June 15, 2024.Happening at more than 25 venues across San Diego County, the games will feature more than 35 different sports including bench press, dodgeball, air pistol, pickleball, rowing, baseball, bowling, golf, tennis, CrossFit®, and more. The US Police & Fire Championships are an Olympic-style competition for first responders and public safety personnel across the United States. The annual games draw thousands of athletes from law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, custom and correctional officers, and more.   • Make Tiny Ceramics!Join me in the land of miniatures. You will learn how and get to create tiny pottery on a mini pottery wheel. No previous pottery experience necessary!In this 2-hour class, you will learn to create 1-3 tiny pots and can add some color if you would like to. You will learn how to center the clay and open it up to form tiny pots, bowls, or plates. This class is a great way to learn the basics of a wheel on a small scale. It is less intimidating and is an accessible way to throw and center clay. Grab a friend or family member who’s been curious about ceramics and come join me in creating tiny pottery!This class includes clay, under glazing and firing of the clay. The clay cannot be taken home at the time of the class because it must be kiln fired. The turn around is 1-2 weeks for drying, glazing, and firing before you pick up your miniature creations.No experience necessary.   • Joel Rafael has been writing and performing for over 50 years. His bio takes us on a tour of up and down the West Coast, eventually landing in Encinitas, where he also began a lifetime friendship with songwriter Jack Tempchin. During the late 1970s, Joel performed around southern California in various groups. In the early 1980s, he found a niche in San Diego County as an opener for nationally touring acts for several local promoters. Shortly after, in 1981, he recorded his first album "Dharma Bums," and in the early 1990s, the Joel Rafael Band was born.Joel performed for years at the Woody Guthrie Festival and, in 2003, he released an album of all Woody Guthrie tunes, "Woodeye." Within two years he had recorded another album of Guthrie songs, "Woodyboye," and this one included four Woody Guthrie co-writes with lyrics given to him by Woody’s daughter, Nora Guthrie.As a solo performer and with his band, Joel has opened shows and shared stages with artists including Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Joan Baez, John Lee Hooker, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, John Trudell, Laura Nyro, Kris Kristofferson, Dar Williams, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Odetta, and Taj Mahal.In 2015, Joel released a ninth album, "Baladista," delivering ten essential ballads that embrace and celebrate the human spirit and reflect the half-century journey of an American songwriter. His latest work, "Rose Avenue," released in 2019, gracefully defines him and his contribution to the American canon. Jack Tempchin is a legendary hit songwriter, whose compositions "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and "Already Gone" are synonymous with the southern California sound. These songs can be found on the Eagles’ compilation Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, which the RIAA named the Best-Selling U.S. Album of the 20th Century.Jack’s songs have been performed or recorded by artists including George Jones, Buck Owens, Emmylou Harris, Glen Campbell, Jackson Browne, Dwight Yoakam, Linda Ronstadt, Patty Loveless, Trisha Yearwood, Tanya Tucker, Richie Havens, Sammy Kershaw, Kate Wolf, and Tom Rush. Jack has also performed live with three Eagles: Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit. He has also played with Poco, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Chicago, Chris Hillman, Herb Pedersen, Jimmy Webb, Al Kooper, Kenny Loggins, Karla Bonoff, Christopher Cross, and Dolly Parton. In the mid-1990s, Jack toured as the opening act for Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band at Radio City Music Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.In the 1980s, Jack co-wrote a dozen radio hits for Glenn Frey’s solo career. Tempchin/Frey co-writes include Top 40 hits "Smuggler’s Blues" and "You Belong to The City" for the original MIAMI VICE TV show soundtrack. Jack’s songs are featured in such films as "The Big Lebowski" and "Thelma & Louise."In 2019, Jack was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York City.
