Today Lawmakers confronted Attorney General Alberto Gonzales over the firing of former San Diego US Attorney Carol Lam. Todd Zwillich has this from Washington.
The firing of Lam and seven other US attorneys late last year has sparked a firestorm on Capitol Hill. Gonzales originally said he had little to do with the firings, but has since changed part of his story. Now it has Gonzales fighting to keep his job.
Lam says she was never told justice officials had a problem with her prosecution of immigration cases. Gonzales said she was told. One of Gonzales' staffers backed up Lam in congressional testimony.
New York Democrat Charles Schumer grilled Gonzales on the contradiction.
Schumer : That's what Carol Lam said, that's what Kyle Sampson said.
Gonzales : Senator why would members of congress send her letters about her immigration performance. Why would they want to have meetings with her?
Schumer : Sir, Sir!
