Lawsuit Filed Against Navy Broadway Project

A massive development project on San Diego’s prime bay front is coming under increased scrutiny. Opponents of the Navy Broadway project gathered today to raise objections to the proposed high rises by the bay. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Opponents of the Navy Broadway project have filed suit against the Navy. The Broadway Complex Coalition says the Navy’s failed to do a public environmental review of its plan to finance a new headquarters by commercializing the Embarcadero. Congressman Bob Filner has also weighed in - asking the state and federal attorneys generals for an investigation of the Navy’s lease agreement with developer Doug Manchester. Coalition member Don Wood says the Navy Broadway project has statewide and national implications

Wood: If the Navy is successful in converting this project into a private development project, cutting the public out of the base closure process will be encouraged to do the same thing with local bases all along the pacific coast and across the country.

The Navy says it cannot comment on ongoing lawsuits, but maintains there is no need for more studies, since nothing has changed since an agreement struck with the city in 1992. Alison St John KPBS news.
