San Diego teachers are expected to hand out a drastically different kind of report card to all of their elementary students next year. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
The new Standards-Based Report Card shows parents whether their kids are advanced, proficient or basic measure against all the state's standards in a given subject. A compilation of student work is also attached to the report, showing how teachers came to their conclusions.
About 60 schools are trying it out this year, but next year all elementary campuses use standards-based grading. So far teachers say the district isn't giving them enough time to collect the needed data.
Teachers union president Camille Zombro : It’s like the district hasn't met a good idea they don't like and so in the last 7 to 10 years we've seen one good idea after another just piled and piled and piled on to where teachers are working 60, 80-hour work weeks, many of them coming in on weekends, it’s just ridiculous.
Zombro also says the new report card itself leaves many parents confused. District officials acknowledge they are kinks in whole process -- and they're working this year eliminate any confusion and make it easier on teachers.
