New South Bay Toll Road Promises Traffic Relief

A new 10-mile toll road opens in the South Bay today -- the first such road in San Diego County. The South Bay Expressway runs from State Route 54 in Spring Valley to State Route 905 near the border.

New South Bay Toll Road Promises Traffic Relief

Tom Fudge: This week, San Diego County has a new 10-mile stretch of freeway. It's called the South Bay Expressway. It's actually an extension of State Route 125, stretching from Route 54 in Spring Valley in the North to Route 905 near the Mexican border.

The South Bay Expressway is a toll road, built by a private company. CALTRANS hopes it will make north-south commutes, in the Southeastern part of the San Diego metro area, a lot faster and more convenient. This is a stretch of freeway that's been on the drawing board for decades. Even now that it's open, it hasn't entirely escaped controversy. The expressway was fought for many years by environmentalists. Even now, some people are concerned whether it has adequate drainage to handle heavy rain storms.
