Overheated Transformer Cuts All Power at Palomar College

Two of San Diego County's largest colleges experienced power and cooling problems on Tuesday. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Palomar College officials say an underground electrical transformer overheated, cutting power to the entire campus. Afternoon classes and campus activities were canceled.

San Diego Gas and Electric officials say the college's power outage was not part of a rolling blackout.

About 26,000 students are enrolled in the Palomar Community College district with a vast majority attending the San Marcos campus.

Meanwhile, San Diego State University had problems of its own. The campus’ main cooling system went down, affecting a number of classes and lecture halls. However, school wasn't canceled.

Air handlers are circulating air, but classes are still warmer than usual. College officials say it will take about a day to restore the massive system.
