All Charges Dropped Against Pendleton Marine Accused of Murder

All charges are dropped against a Camp Pendleton Marine accused of murdering an unarmed prisoner in Iraq. A general wants to review the evidence against Sergeant Jermaine Nelson. The charges could be reinstated. KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps has details.

Prosecutors say Nelson and his squadmates captured at least four insurgents after a gunfight in Fallujah and then shot them to death in custody. Nelson was charged with one murder last month. Now he's in the clear -- at least for now. Lt. Gen. James Mattis dropped the charges without prejudice, which means prosecutors could bring new charges after further investigation.

Meanwhile, Nelson's squad leader, Jose Nazario Jr., is in Riverside federal court. Nazario is being prosecuted in civilian court because he left the military.
