San Diego County Water Suppliers to Face More Challenges

The water supply coming to San Diego County is expected to be pinched even more after a state agency decision to protect another fish species in Northern California. One of the county's water suppliers says it's the latest challenge in keeping the water flowing. KPBS reporter Ed Joyce has more.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California gets 60 percent of its water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Metro supplies about 30 percent of San Diego County's water.

Metro Spokesman Bob Muir says reductions in Delta water means other sources will be needed to boost local supplies.

Muir : But it really points to the things that we need to do: The additional planning, the additional conservation, the additional investments in water recycling. All these things, it's not a matter of choosing one over the other. It's really something that we have to do across the board in order to give us the diversity of supplies to see us through these challenging times.

He says a continued drought in the Colorado River Basin, the other main water source, also complicates the water supply picture.
