Water Supplier Approves Rate Hike

A major supplier of water to San Diego voted to hike rates. The increase means water will cost slightly more next year in San Diego County. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has details.

The Metropolitan Water District is boosting wholesale water rates 14.3 percent starting next January. MWD officials say the increase is necessary for two reasons: a federal court decision aimed at protecting an endangered fish in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta and a long-time drought on the Colorado River. The San Diego County Water Authority buys supplies from the Metro Water District.

The Authority's John Liarakos says the rate hike means an overall water rate increase of about 10% next year. MWD says the average household could see an increase of $1.50 a month on their bills next year.
