Taxpayer Group Assigns Low Grades to Vista School District

A local taxpayers group gives Vista school district officials low marks for how they managed a multi-million-dollar school construction bond. The group also handed out grades to 11 other San Diego County school districts. Ana Tintocalis has the story.

San Diego County's Taxpayers Association found cost overruns, delays and poor leadership in Vista. That forced the district to cancel half of its planned school construction projects.

Association president Lani Lutar says Vista is an example of how a district didn’t take time to conduct studies and appoint a good oversight committee.

Lutar : Many districts try to cut corners. They will argue that they don’t have the funds to conduct the research that’s necessary. But we don’t buy that. If they aren’t prepared, then they should not be going before voters with a bond proposal.

The association says the Escondido Union High School District also did poorly. Meanwhile, the Grossmont-Cuyamaca College District and San Diego Unified managed their projects well.
