Mayor Sanders Opposes Budget Analyst's Suggestions

San Diegans descended on city hall for an emotional public hearing to protest the closure of Libraries and Rec. Centers.

San Diegans descended on city hall for an emotional public hearing to protest the closure of Libraries and Rec. Centers.

The city's Independent Budget analyst, Andrea Tevlin, suggested the council delay closing any libraries for 6 months until a comprehensive library plan has been completed. She says it does not make sense to close 7 libraries when  5 new  branch libraries are being planned.

But Mayor Jerry Sanders was not sympathetic to that idea.

Sanders :  Delaying the inevitable is expensive… to keep those facilities open for another half year the council  budget analyst proposes we raid 2.4 million dollars from the transient occupancy tax fund.. It's time we start climbing out of the hole we're in not to dig it deeper.

Sanders wants to keep the Tourist Tax reserves to help cover a big drop in tourist revenues expected next year.

The council will decide what to do next Monday.

If the mayor vetoes their decision, they plan another budget meeting on December 1st.

The council wants to finalise a budget before the new council takes office December 8th.
