Michael Ott is head of LAFCO , the Local Agency Formation Commission, an agency responsible for creating new government agencies.

Ott: The County of San Diego as a governing body will now be responsible for fire protection in about a million acres of territory that had previously been unserved.

San Diego County dropped out of fire protection for the back country in the 1970s.

The creation of this new fire protection agency marks a significant step towards taking responsibility for coordinated regional fire protection.

However the cost could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. So far the County has allocated $15.5 million to the task.
