County Uses New Equipment on Pendleton Fire

A wildfire that burned up to 1,900 acres on a Marine Corps explosives range was contained Thursday without causing any injuries or damage to buildings on the base.

The blaze was fully surrounded about 16 hours after it began.

San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox says the money the county budgeted for fire protection services in the past year is already paying off.

Cox says two leased super-scooper planes helped put out yesterday's blaze.

Cox:
The 1,000 acre fire that we had at Camp Pendleton was the first time that we were able to put those into use. They worked like a charm. In fact, as I understand it they were able to drop water and return in about 4 1/2 minutes from where the fire was in Camp Pendleton going out, picking out water in the Pacific Ocean and coming back and helping to contain that fire.

Cox says the county also bought eight new four-wheel drive fire engines to protect outlying rural areas.
