San Diego County has entered the field of veterans' care to supplement the care provided by the VA. Thousands of new veterans are now returning to San Diego, and their families need help adjusting.

The County has earmarked $1 million a year for the next five years for programs designed to reach out to veterans and their families.

Ron Stark is program manager of a new outreach helpline called "Courage to Call." It is a 24/7 telephone line, staffed by people who are vets themselves. He says its purpose is partly to determine the level of need in the community.

“We really don’t have a real good grip on how big this is going to be,” Stark said. “This is a learning program that may be identifying a need to expand after a few years."

Almost 20,000 veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are now registered with the VA Medical Center in La Jolla. The VA has 11 psychiatrists, eight psychologists and seven social workers to handle their mental health needs.
