A possibly gang-related shooting in a City Heights neighborhood left one person wounded this afternoon and prompted a brief lockdown at a nearby primary school.
About a half-dozen gunshots rang out in the area of 52nd Street and Orange Avenue shortly before 2 p.m., according to San Diego police. Officers arrived to find a victim suffering from at least one bullet wound to the back, SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said.
Medics took the man to a trauma center. Details on his condition were unavailable late this afternoon.
Administrators at Fay Elementary School directed teachers to keep all students locked indoors while officers began searching the area by ground and from the air. Police gave the school a go-ahead to lift the lockdown about five minutes later, said Jack Brandais, a spokesman for San Diego Unified School District.
Witnesses said two men who appeared to be in their early to mid-20s -- one riding a bicycle -- fled the area following the shooting, according to Hassen.
About an hour later, authorities surrounded a 52nd Street apartment where one or both of the suspects may have holed up. Officers shut down the street in the area while attempting to contact any occupants of the residence near Trojan Avenue.
The shooting was believed to be gang-related, according to police.
