In a press release, Gonzalez said she vows "to seek the seat once it is vacated by the current assembly member."

The 80th District is currently represented by Assemblyman Ben Hueso. It includes Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach, San Ysidro, City Heights, Barrio Logan, Sherman Heights and Paradise Hills.

Gonzalez said she will seek election if Hueso is elected to the state Senate in a special election this spring. Hueso is expected to run to fill the state Senate seat left vacant by Juan Vargas, who was elected to the U.S. Congress in November.

Otherwise, Gonzalez said she will run in 2016, when Hueso must vacate his seat because of term limits.

Hueso endorsed Gonzalez's run, along with San Diego Mayor Bob Filner and Congressman-elect , Gonzalez's press release said.

“I’ve hammered out tough compromises between business and workers, between teachers and our school board, and between developers and environmentalists by putting practicality ahead of ideology," Gonzalez said in a statement. "That approach worked in San Diego County and it will work in Sacramento. Extremism doesn't work. Pragmatic problem-solving does."
