Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group Arrives In Timor-Leste

The San Diego-based Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group, along with Camp Pendleton's 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, arrived in the country of Timor-Leste on Wednesday. The Peleliu ARG is teaming up with Timor-Leste Defense Forces to take part in Exercise Crocodilo, a week-long exercise that involves everything from jungle warfare to police training, according to the U.S. Embassy in Timor-Leste.

Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, is one of the newest countries on the planet, having become its own independent nation in 2002. It is located in Southeast Asia near Indonesia.

Capt. Mark Sakaguchi, commander of Amphibious Squadron Three, said of Exercise Crocodilo:

“This exercise presents a valuable opportunity to further strengthen the already strong relationship between the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps and the Timor-Leste Defense Force. Visits like these are vital toward developing and strengthening relationships with regional partners."

In addition to participating in military exercises, the 15th MEU Marines and the Peleliu crew will also help the local people with their medical and dental needs, as well as provide construction assistance to shore up the local infrastructure.
