California Implementing New Way of Teaching

California Implementing New Way of Teaching
The days of tedious memorization and multiple choice tests may soon be a thing of the past for California students. The state is beginning to implement an entirely new way of teaching known as the common core curriculum.

California is setting aside more than $1 billion for the implementation of a common core curriculum in the new state budget. The method takes a holistic approach to learning. For instance, students won't just memorize fractions; teachers will make sure kids understand the concept behind them.

Sacramento City Unified School District Superintendent Jonathan Raymond said his students have been using "common core" since 2011.

"These are world-class standards. And we're getting our backsides beat off by other counties. Finland, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Canada. And you know why? Because they've got these world-class standards," Raymond explained.

Beginning in 2015, students will be tested using Common Core methods. Several other states are already working on implementing similar standards.
