The game combines soccer and golf, is played on a golf course and adheres to the same rules as golf.

Josh Karp, head pro at the Welk Resort's golf course near Escondido, recently spoke with KPBS "Morning Edition" anchor Deb Welsh.

Karp said the goal of the game is to reach the cup, which is about 21 inches in diameter, in as few shots as possible.

The only talent it requires? Being able to kick a soccer ball.

As for growing interest in the game, Karp says you can't discount the World Cup but he believes there's more to it than just that.

The American FootGolf League, which is the sport’s U.S. governing body, has accredited 160 FootGolf courses in 32 states.

In addition, the inaugural official U.S. FootGolf National Championship will take place in 2015.

The Welk Resort is home to San Diego's first footgolf course. Just a year ago it introduced nine holes of FootGolf and has since expanded it to all 18 holes on its par-3 Oaks Course.
