A new carrier is about to arrive in San Diego. For the first time, the USS Theodore Roosevelt will call San Diego home.
The carrier supported 1,812 combat sorties over Iraq and Syria as part of the American mission to destroy terrorist operations, including ISIS.
Fresh off of a round-the-world trip that took it to the Middle East and the South China Sea, the USS Theodore Roosevelt is expected to steam into Naval Air Station North Island early Monday. It is part of an historic swap of three carriers that began when the USS Ronald Reagan replaced the USS George Washington at the end of summer.
Families are expected to be on the dock waiting for the crew of the Theodore Roosevelt, though much of the crew will ultimately head back to Norfolk, Va. They’ll switch places with San Diego-based crew members now on board the USS George Washington. The move is designed to save the Navy $41 million in relocation costs.
The Theodore Roosevelt is nicknamed "The Big Stick" and "TR."
