State Senator Christine Kehoe holds a hearing in San Diego today to consider new legislation to raise money for preventing wildfires. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
Kehoe has proposed a package of new measures to address rapid urban growth in the fire prone backcountry. However her proposals have already raised a firestorm of protest.
Kehoe says one element of her plan tackles the two-thirds vote needed to pass new taxes to pay for firefighting resources.
Kehoe : We are lowering the voter approval rate for firefighting measures to 55 percent so communities cities and counties can fund their firefighting more easily.
Taxpayer advocates are adamantly opposed to this idea. They fear it could set a precedent and make it easier to raise new taxes in other areas.
A second proposal under discussion at the hearing is whether to impose a one time fee on new developments in back country areas, to pay for fire prevention. Existing homes could pay reduced fees if they comply with fire protection building codes.
