Questions Remain About How to Fund Governor's Healthcare Package

San Diego Senator Denise Ducheny says she agrees with the governor that the state's   healthcare system needs to be fixed. But the Democratic lawmaker says she has some questions about how the governor wants to finance his proposed overhaul. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

As chair of the senate budget committee, Ducheny says she has to worry about money. And Ducheny says she's not sure if Schwarzenegger's healthcare reform package will pencil out.

The governor says his plan would make healthcare more affordable and would let people choose their own coverage.

Ducheny says that sounds good, but:

Ducheny : We want to see the entire package. You know, this is close enough, and it's something that all of us want badly enough, that we certainly want to do it correctly and in a way that's sustainable.

The governor's plan would be financed primarily through higher taxes on employers, hospitals, and tobacco.

Ducheny says she wants to know how the state's general fund might be affected, and what next year's budget will look like.
