Sheriff's Dept. Praised by Office it Paid to Review Police Shootings
The San Diego County Sheriff's Department received glowing praise today. The department paid the privately-run Office of Independent Review to look into 25 shootings involving deputies between 2003 to 2005. Three of the shootings took place in Vista within a five-day period.
Mike Gennaco says the Sheriff's Department cooperated fully.
Gennaco : This department took that crisis and used it for a meaningful way to introspectively look at the way it does business and try to learn and from it and that heartens me as an outside reviewer in a very positive way.
The Los Angeles-based company was paid $250,000 by the sheriff's department to conduct the review.
San Diego ACLU executive director Kevin Keenan says it's a step in the right direction. But he's concerned that the 39 recommendations in the review won't be implemented. None of them involves major changes.
