Downed Power Lines Confirmed as Cause of Deadly Wildfire

State officials confirm that downed power lines sparked the largest of the wildfires that ravaged Southern California last month.

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- State officials confirm that downed power lines sparked the largest of the wildfires that ravaged Southern California last month.

The Witch fire killed two people, burned nearly 200,000 acres and destroyed more than 1,000 homes.

Two families who lost homes in the Witch and Rice Canyon fires are suing San Diego Gas & Electric Co., saying the utility failed to clear brush. The company says it adhered to regulations.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has already blamed the Rice fire on power lines.

The fires have been directly blamed for ten deaths. They burned more than 500,000 acres and destroyed more than 2,000 homes.
