S.D. Chargers to Hold Town Hall Meeting in Chula Vista Tonight

The San Diego Chargers will hold their last townhall meeting tonight in Chula Vista, as they try to gauge public sentiment toward the possible construction of a new stadium.

Chargers' General Counsel Mark Fabiani tells the KPBS Program "These Days" that two sites remain under consideration. Both in Chula Vista. In earlier public meetings, the clear favorite has been a site on the Bayfront when the South Bay Power Plant is located.

But Fabiani says it comes with significant complications.

Fabiani : The land, for instance is not owned by the City of Chula Vista, it's owned by the Port Commission. So first of all you've got the city, second, you've got the Port Commission. And you've got state laws involved...the State Power Agency is heavily involved. And last, but not least, the Coastal Commission. So it's an enormously complicated site. But, if people think we ought to look there, and we think it's potentially viable, that's what we want to start by the end of the year.

The other site near Highway 125 has encountered considerable opposition. It would require heavy car traffic through neighborhoods on game days, in an area where there is no public transit.
