Spokesman Dimitri Stanich says they're dangerous if they emit more than a small amount of ozone.

Stanich : The State of California has established a standard of what is considered a health protective limit for outdoor ozone and these machines can produce enough ozone that it would cause a stage one smog alert inside of a room.

Stanich says the devices can lead to coughing, shortness of breath, and worsen asthma symptoms. The ban goes into effect in 2010. A list of the devices the Air Resources Board calls “hazardous” is on its website .

A company that makes air purifiers called “EcoQuest” released a statement saying its products are proven to be effective. It noted that the devices have not been recalled.
