San Diego City Attorney Mike Aguirre announced his candidacy for re-election today. Aguirre says he needs to finish repairing the damage of past corruption. KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps has more.
Aguirre says “wrongdoers” lurk in City Hall, even after the pension scandal shook city government. Aguirre has fought to roll back hundreds of thousands of dollars in pension benefits, which he calls “illegal.”
Aguirre : The absurdity of the city attorney acting as the lawyer for City Hall wrongdoers is over. Obeying the law is not a policy decision. It is a legal duty.
Aguirre's pension case has suffered several setbacks in the courts. He says with another term, he can fix the city's billion-dollar pension deficit.
Aguirre faces a crowded field of challengers. They are City Council President Scott peters, Councilman Brian Maienschein, Judge Jan Goldsmith, and local attorneys Dan Coffey and Amy Lepine.
