San Diego public schools will soon get a major facelift under Proposition S. Voters approved the $2.1  billion school bond measure yesterday. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Prop. S easily captured more than 55-percent of the vote needed to pass. The money will go for major repairs and renovation at 180 schools.

Eight years ago voters approved Prop. MM, a slightly smaller school bond measure which resulted in the construction of a dozen schools.

Superintendent Terry Grier says that set a good example.

Grier: I think there were promises made and promises kept. And so we're going to work very hard during Prop. S to maintain that level of public confidence and trust.

School officials say aren't wasting any time. In fact, they're already assembling an independent oversight committee.

But not everyone is happy. Critic Pat Flannery says the measure is a bail out.

Flannery: What it shows is that if you throw enough money at a proposition, it will probably pass.

Under Prop. S, San Diego city property owners will pay $66 for every $100,000 of assessed value until the year 2044.
