Mexican human rights attorneys plan to ask government officials in Tijuana Tuesday morning to protect two Tijuana women who've come under threat for pursuing human rights cases.
Blanca Messina is the de-facto spokeswoman for more than three dozen Tijuana policeman, including her own father. The officers say the Mexican military and Tijuana's police chief tortured them so they'd confess ties to organized crime.
Messina has helped raise international awareness about the cases.
She says that's why she's received three phone calls warning her to back down or else.
Rupert Knox is with Amnesty International.
He says the family of Messina's attorney also received a threatening phone call. And two men launched a molotov cocktail at the family's van and burnt it. "We believe there is sufficient evidence to show that these persons are at risk and the authorities have a direct responsibility to prevent and investigate these incidents to be sure they do not go worse," Knox says.
A Mexican human rights attorney says the top objective is to get police protection for the women.
Meanwhile, Amnesty has sent an emergency message about the case to its 2-million members. Knox says, "We want Mexican officials to know the world is watching."
