At least 89 people lost their lives over the weekend as a tornado outbreak rolled through the city of Joplin, Missouri. Joplin Fire chief Mitch Randles told the Detroit Free Press the tornado damaged between 25 and 30 percent of the town, including his own house.
Joplin High School principal Kerry Sachetta described the devastation to the Freep:
“You see pictures of World War II, the devastation and all that with the bombing. That’s really what it looked like. I couldn’t even make out the side of the building. It was total devastation in my view. I just couldn’t believe what I saw.” (Read more)
