Gunman Kidnaps Woman At Red Light In Hillcrest

Police say a 32-year-old woman was kidnapped as she waited in her car at a red light in the Hillcrest area of San Diego.

Police Detective Gary Hassen told the San Diego Union-Tribune (http://bit.ly/qBCtNi ) the kidnapper opened her passenger door and got in around 9 p.m. Monday, then ordered her at gunpoint to drive to an ATM and withdraw money from her account.

Hassen says the gunman had the victim drive for a while, but then put her in the back of the car and he drove. About five hours later, Hassen says the kidnapper dropped her off on state Route 94 near Interstate 805. He says she used a freeway call box to alert authorities.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
