According to a San Diego Sheriff's Department news release, the person who discovered the ordnance actually picked it up and took it to a nearby lifeguard tower. Lifeguards wasted no time calling in Sheriff's deputies, who promptly evacuated the area on arrival.
The Sheriff's Bomb Arson Unit came and determined the ordnance not to be dangerous. They collected it, and disposed of it "in a safe a prudent manner."
The beach was closed for about two hours.
