State Capitol Flags Lowered For California Soldier Killed In Afghanistan

California Governor Jerry Brown ordered all flags over the State Capitol lowered today in honor of Army Spc. Kenneth Clifford Alvarez, 23, of Santa Maria:

On behalf of all Californians, Governor Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown honor Spc. Kenneth C. Alvarez, who bravely gave his life in service to our state and nation.

The Governor and First Lady extend their deepest condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.
Alvarez was killed August 23 in Afghanistan by an improvised explosive device, according to the Department of Defense.

Alvarez was assigned to 2nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.

As Home Post reported Monday, Alvarez leaves behind a wife and child.
