SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Police Officers Association is endorsing Democrat Nathan Fletcher in his bid to be the city's next mayor.

The San Diego Police Officers Association gave Nathan Fletcher its coveted endorsement in the upcoming Nov. 19 mayoral election.

This isn't the group's first time supporting Fletcher. Last year, the association also rallied behind Fletcher, who switched during the 2012 campaign from Republican to Independent.

This time the police officers' union took a bit longer to decide. But union leaders said they were again convinced Fletcher is the one to bring San Diegans together, as well as to tackle the draining of police officers from the department.

The Police Officers Association represents 98 percent of San Diego's force. In addition to facing recruitment and retention issues, the next mayor is faced with the fact that about half of San Diego’s police force will become eligible for retirement in the next four years.
