Rip currents and higher than normal surf are expected Thursday and throughout the weekend along the San Diego County coastline, forecasters said.
A fresh south swell expected to reach coastal waters Thursday prompted the National Weather Service to issue a beach hazards statement, which is set to take effect at 9 a.m. and extend until Sunday afternoon.
"This swell will generate elevated surf along San Diego and Orange county beaches through the weekend, with isolated sets to 7 feet possible on southerly facing beaches," according to the weather service statement. "Strong and dangerous rip currents are likely through the period as well."
Forecasters said 3- to 5-foot surf with isolated sets of up to 7 feet would be possible along San Diego County beaches.
The currents could result in dangerous swimming conditions, especially for those with little experience in the water, according to the weather service. Beachgoers were advised to obey posted warning signs, use caution in and around the water and to swim near a lifeguard.
