Kevin Bollaert is seen during his arraignment on 31 felony counts, including conspiracy, identity theft and extortion in 2013.

A convicted revenge porn website operator received sentencing in a San Diego court Friday. Kevin Bollaert was given 18 years behind bars, just two years shy of the maximum sentence.

In February, Bollaert became the first person found guilty of crimes related to running a revenge porn website. His was called UGotPosted.Com.

Users of the site uploaded nude photos without the consent of the person pictured. The photos were tagged with the names and social media accounts of the victims, most of them women.

Bollaert ran another site where he charged hundreds of dollars to take down the photos.

Appearing on the site was traumatizing and could ruin reputations, victims testified at trial. Bollaert's parents spoke at sentencing, expressing remorse over their son's actions.

In the wake of Bollaert's conviction, many social media sites, including Twitter and Reddit, announced new rules explicitly banning revenge porn.

Bollaert will not be eligible for release until he has served at least half of his sentence.
