Coachella Bands in San Diego

Music

For music fans, the Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival is one of the hottest tickets around (tickets start at $399 and sell out as soon as they're available.)

The three-day festival attracts some of the buzziest indie musicians, DJs and even celebrities, and is known for its surprise guests and legendary reunions.

But don't worry if you couldn't get tickets. San Diego is close enough to Coachella that many bands make stops here before or after their Coachella sets. Plus, you don't have to deal with camping or dust storms.

Here's a look at some of the Coachella bands playing in San Diego:

At The Observatory

Beach House, April 15; Foals with Kiev, April 17; The Front Bottoms, April 18; Silversun Pickups with Joywave, April 19; The Arcs, April 20; Parov Stelar with Stelartronic and Anduze, April 21 and Deerhunter, April 22.

At The Belly Up

Record Store Day

Music

Record Store Day is a national event that celebrates independent record stores with exclusive releases by bands and live performances.

About 20 San Diego record stores will participate, including M-Theory in Mission Hills, Lou's Records in Encinitas and Record City in Hillcrest.

You'll find exclusive Record Store Day releases by bands like Air, 808 State, Alt J, Big Star, Death Cab for Cutie, Deftones, Alejandro Escovedo, The Flaming Lips, Madonna, Run the Jewels, Regina Spektor and many more. (Read the complete list.)

Throughout the day, neighborhood record stores will also have live music, DJ, entertainment and specials.

Celso Piña Latin Music Party

Music

Cumbia musician Celso Piña — known as "Rebelde del Acordeón" (rebel of the accordion) — will headline a music party that features cumbia, rock, reggae and hip-hop.

Other acts scheduled to perform include Cumbia Machin, Los Ingratos, GRUPO REO and DJ La Mafia LMP.

This 21-and-over event will also have tacos from popular local restaurants and a beer garden. It happens from 3 to 8 p.m., with Piña performing at 6 p.m.

Anoushka Shankar

Music

Sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar is one of the leading figures in contemporary world music.

She will perform an intimate concert featuring an ensemble of Eastern and Western musicians.

Shankar, the daughter of sitar legend Ravi Shankar, studied Indian music exclusively with her father since the age of 9. Her style explores a crossover between Indian music and a variety of genres, including flamenco, electronica and jazz.

She is the first Indian female and youngest ever Grammy nominee in the World Music category.
