Suspect Dead In Santee SWAT Standoff

A man who allegedly shot a crossbow at deputies investigating a fight at his Santee home Friday, prompting them to return fire, was found dead inside the residence following a several-hour SWAT standoff.

The domestic dispute in the 9900 block of Woodglen Vista Drive was reported shortly after 2 p.m., according to sheriff's officials.

A woman involved in the disturbance left the residence unharmed, but a 31-year-old man holed up inside and refused repeated orders to exit and surrender, authorities said.

During the standoff, the man shot several arrows from a crossbow toward deputies, and they returned fire with their service guns, according to broadcast reports.

The special weapons and tactics personnel took up positions around the home while deputies tried to persuade the suspect to give himself up, officials said.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the SWAT team sent a camera-equipped robotic device into the residence, finding the man's body. His cause of death was not immediately clear.

No other injuries were reported.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
