San Diego's Top Weekend Events: 'Star Trek,' Opera And More

You're listening to Midday Edition on KPBS I am Allyson St. John in for Midday Edition . The weekend is upon us. And there's something for everyone. From a Star Trek concert to a musical. Here is the weekend preview. Star Trek fans will be heading over to the civic theater this weekend. There will be a concert called Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage concert . There will be a live Symphony and they will be playing music from the Star Trek from the original series, all of them. Let's have a little listen to all of it. Yes. [ Music ] What is the experience like? It is kind of like you are going to be Symphony and sit listen to music. But there will also be clips from the TV show and movies projected on the big screen. So you will hear your favorite hit and you will see them. So it is a fun experience for Star Trek fan for people who want to get more into it. People might be dressing up as well. Yes. So that is Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage concert tonight at the San Diego civic Theatre. The San Diego Opera is going on the listening tour and the first one is tonight. They are listening to the us. The general director David Bennett wants to hear from the public about the Opera. Is it too long. Is it just right? He is going to ask the public sessions. What people expect when they go to this? These will be multi-media conversation. People will be responding to questions in real-time with their phones. People are encouraged to show up with fully-charged smartphones or devices that can access the Internet. So it will be kind of modern. There will be some other was happening throughout the next few months. The one tonight is at the natural history Museum. The other stops are in La Jolla, Carlsbad. For those of you who want to give feedback about the Opera you can do that at the natural history Museum. Reservations are required and can be made online. There is a different Opera put nonentity organ -- putting on another program tonight. They are the city Opera. They like pieces that tell a story. There was a lot of buzz about them at the La Jolla Playhouse last October. The show was called "The Andrée Expedition" . It is based on a true story of three Swedish men that wanted to travel to the north below -- North Paul in a hot air balloon. That didn't go very well for them. The show is based on diary entries from that journey. Interesting. So that is "The Andrée Expedition" playing this weekend. At the bread and salt gallery in barrio Logan. This year we have the UC San Diego's Muir Musical presents "In The Heights" which is from the actors to the orchestra. They are interested in theater and not necessarily majoring in. So kind of experimental. And remind us what the productions. "In the Heights" is like a love story set in Washington Heights. It is a heavy Latino community. The show mixes rap and so fun I think we have a clip of it. [ Music ]. That Celtic it will be fun. Is this an annual thing? Yes they do it every year. They put on very ambitious shows. They take it really seriously and it should be a great experience. "In The Heights" basis weekend and next weekend at the Mandeville auditorium. The live arts Festival is a 10 day dance event and this weekend they are doing a free showcase of what you can expect during the Festival in April. There will be modern dance all over the place. You will see choreographers locally and internationally, a black lives matter piece, and a wheelchair performance as well. That looks like something to look for to. The kickoff is Saturday at the Joe and five -- Joe & Vi Jacobs Center. So Tim Flannery a long time musician will be playing. Here is a clip of what it will sound like.
