Thirty-eight San Diego Democrats are in Charlotte, North Carolina today for the Democratic National Convention.

DNC: Democrats Focused On 52nd District
The 52nd Congressional District is in the spotlight at preconvention meetings at the Democratic National Convention. The head of the San Diego Democratic Party says even Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has talked about the district being one of the key races for the Democrats.

The convention hasn’t officially started and already the San Diego delegation heard about the importance of the 52nd congressional district from several high profile speakers, according to Jess Durfee, Chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party.

The new district, created by last year’s redistricting process, includes Coronado, Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and parts of North County, including Poway and Rancho Bernardo.

The two candidates – Republican Congressman Brian Bilbray (a former San Diego councilman) and Democrat Scott Peters, a San Diego Port Commissioner (and former San Diego City Council president), are in a tight race.

By noon Monday, three democratic members of congress had addressed the California delegation at pre-convention meetings.

“All of them in addition to (Minority) Leader (Nancy) Pelosi mentioned the Scott Peters (52nd) race," Durfee said.

The convention officially begins Tuesday evening. The San Diego delegation includes superdelegates Congressman and mayoral candidate Bob Filner, and Representative Susan Davis.
