After four years, the legal dispute over La Jolla's fireworks seems to be finally coming to an end. The San Diego City Council will hear the lawsuit's settlement Tuesday.
Under the agreement, Marco Gonzalez, the lawyer who filed the suit, will get $250,000 to end the litigation. The city will have to do environmental reviews before issuing future permits for special events.
Gonzalez filed four lawsuits against the city four years ago. He argued the city needed to do environmental reviews before giving out permits for the La Jolla Cove fireworks. He won the first three lawsuits, and the city appealed, but then decided to settle because that's cheaper than continuing the legal battle.
The La Jolla Cove show was initially canceled this year for lack of funds, but KPBS media partner 10News reports that several hotels, businesses and residents stepped forward to donate the $30,000 needed to put on the show.
The City Council approved the settlement in an April closed session and will consider final approval on Tuesday.
