Imperfect Union: How Jessie and John Frémont mapped the west, invented celebrity and helped cause the Civil War” tells the story of how the husband and wife team mythologized John Frémont's exploits in the American frontier.

Inskeep also reveals why some called John Frémont a fraud and why he and his wife were accused of helping to start the Civil War.
