Rally Anniversary Marks Renewed Calls for Immigration Reform

Two immigrants rights coalitions used Wednesday’s anniversary of the massive immigration march in San Diego to call, again, for Congress to pass realistic immigration reform. The groups advocate different kinds of reform, but say they have the same end goal in mind. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has details.

A year ago today, more than 50,000 people streamed through downtown San Diego to rally against a House immigration reform bill that, among other things, made it a felony to be in the United States illegally. That plan died. Two new proposals have emerged -- one co-authored by a House Republican and Democrat, and another leaked by the White House. Both call for combinations of border enforcement, a guest worker program, and for immigrants to pay penalties to file for residency.

Avery Ware with Si Se Puede says people should not be duped into supporting either one.

Ware : Its better that no immigration reform happens than that a bad one happens.

Meanwhile, members of the Fair Immigration Reform Movement say the President's plan is ruthless and unworkable. But they are amenable to a guest worker program as long as it protects workers.
