Tom Fudge: The end of last week brought some bad news in a year of economics that seemed to have a fair amount of bad news. The United State’s jobless rate at the end of last year rose to five percent. A few jobs were added nationwide in December, but only because the government had a hiring spree. Employment at private American firms actually declined.
The backdrop of these stories, like the one we got last Friday, has been a declining housing market. Prices are down all over the country. In San Diego the real estate market slump has been quite profound, since our housing market soared into the stratosphere earlier this decade. Today, everyone is wondering whether we're headed toward a recession.
