A local man killed in the Fort Hood shooting rampage just reenlisted in the Army last month.

Army reservist John Gaffaney worked for San Diego County for 20 years. His most recent position was with the Adult Protection Services department.

Ellen Schmeding, who is with the Health and Human Services Department, said Gaffaney had a career with the army before coming to the county and had reached the rank of Major. She said he wanted to reenlist after 9/11 and was finally accepted last October.

“Everybody’s in a state of shock and having a lot of trouble dealing with the situation today. But others have shared with me that they know that John really wanted to be in the military," she said. "It was what he was driven to do.”

Schmeding said Gaffaney had just arrived in Ft. Hood this week and was getting ready to be deployed overseas. She said he’s survived by his wife and adult son.
