Army Staff Sgt. Jeremie S. Border, 28, was killed September 1, in Batur Village, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire, according to the Department of Defense.

Border was a Green Beret assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Torii Station, Japan.

Border was a graduate of Mesquite High School, where he was a football standout. He also graduated from McMurry University in Abilene in 2006, according to the CBS affiliate in Dallas, CBSDFW.com.

Border's loved ones created a Facebook memorial page in his honor. A fellow soldier wrote on the page:

i had the pleasure of serving with Jeremie over the past year and a half. Awesome. humbled by his sacrifice. You are Loved Jeremie...

Killed in the same attack as Border was Army Staff Sgt. Jonathan P. Schmidt, 28, of Petersburg, Virginia.

Schmidt was assigned to 192nd Ordnance Battalion, 52nd Ordnance Group, 20th Support Command (CBRNE) at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

According to Virginia television station WWBT-TV, Schmidt was just weeks away from returning home. He leaves behind a wife and young son.
